Air frying mushrooms give them a texture that is very similar to roasted or grilled mushrooms. They are really tasty, and go incredibly well with grilled meat, steak or as a part of a full English breakfast.

Ingredients

First, you will need mushrooms. Any mushrooms will work, but I tend to use white mushrooms, chestnut mushrooms or portobello mushrooms.

Additionally, you will need salt and pepper.

An air fryer is also essential. My air fryer is very similar to this one, which has a super convenient air fryer basket.

Instructions

Pre heat yourair fryerto 355 °F / 180 °C. Depending on the make and model of your air fryer, it usually takes 3-5 minutes to heat up.

Meanwhile, you can optionally dice the mushrooms into similar sized pieces. I like to cut them in half, but you can keep them whole if you want.

Place the mushrooms in a bowl, and add the olive oil, salt and pepper. Stir to coat the mushrooms evenly.

Add the mushrooms to the air fryer in a single layer, without much overlap and without overflowing the basket. Air fry for 5-10 minutes. Shake the basket once or twice while it cooks to ensure that the vegetables cook evenly.

The mushrooms are done when they have shrunk slightly and look slightly golden and shriveled.

Top tips

Here are my best tips to help you make the perfect air fryer mushrooms:

  • I like to slice the mushrooms in half, but you might want to either dice them in smaller pieces or not slice them at all depending on their size.
  • Your air fryer might cook faster or slower than mine. Keep an eye on the mushrooms to prevent them from overcooking or burning.

Serving suggestions

Air fried mushrooms are incredible served with a savory breakfast such as a full English, smoked salmon and avocado toast or scrambled eggs.

They can also be enjoyed as a side dish served with dinner or lunch, such as steak, gammon, air fryer breaded chicken or your Sunday roast. For more ideas, you can see my collection on what to serve with roast.

Variations

You can make so many variations of this dish by using different seasonings, marinades and toppings. Here are some of my favorite alternatives:

Spicy mushrooms: Add ½ teaspoon red chili flakes for a spicy kick.

Parmesan & herbs: Add some shredded parmesan and chopped fresh herbs to the mushrooms after they finish air frying. This will give them a beautiful pop of color and a lovely flavor.

BBQ mushrooms: Add 1 teaspoon BBQ seasoning. BBQ mushrooms are perfect with grilled meat, and you can use the same seasoning on the mushrooms as you use on the meat!

Leftovers

Leftover air fried mushrooms can be stored in an airtight container in a refrigerator for up to 4 days. The mushrooms taste great, and you can use them as a side dish for a future meal, or as an ingredient in other dishes, like salads, wraps, casseroles or pasta sauces.
