It’s a lot like French Toast, or a French toast casserole, and it can be served for breakfast, brunch, or a dinner dessert. One of our most popular pear recipes is ourfabulous Irish Dark and White Bread Pudding Recipe (not just for the Irish – ha).

How do you serve bread puddding?

Not only does the house smell delightful when it’s baking (we are pear lovers!), but when you pull this pear bread pudding from the oven, you serve it hot (or warm) with a drizzle of heated-up caramel sauce.

Don’t forget to dust with powdered sugar!

We like to play it safe and bake up 2 pans (or double the recipe for a 9×13 pan).

Tips and substitutions:

  • You can replace the English muffins for croissants or brioche bread (something on the softer side). This will help soak up the egg mixture better, creating a fluffier texture.
  • Use ripe pears, so they are soft and tender.
  • Replace the pears for apples, but they will need to be pre-cooked (soft) before adding.
  • Bake ahead: Make bread pudding ahead nad place in the fridge. Pull out of the refrigerator 30 minutes prior to baking to take some of the chill off.
  • Optional to add a handful of chocolate chips before baking, if you are a chocolate-pear lover!

Do you think it would be just as tasty and the correct consistency, if I used canned pears and drained them? This looks delicious! Thank you for all your recipes, I have saved and used several.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hi, Linda! I have never tried that, but I think it would work. Come back and let me know! Just drain them well. :)

This was my first bread pudding and it turned out amazing. Used Hawaiian bread that I cut up into cudes. did half in muffin tins and the other as a loaf. Took a little longer to bake but it turned out perfectly.

FAQs

What's the difference between flan and milk pudding? ›

Why does bread and butter pudding go watery? ›

Make sure you're baking your bread pudding long enough. If you don't let it cook for the entire bake time, you may find the mixture hasn't set yet and is runny.

What milk is better for pudding? ›

What milk works best in keto & decadent puddings? Take almond milk, for example, currently the leading milk alternative in the US with oat milk being a close second choice. Almond milk is enjoyed for its rich and nutty flavor, not to mention its low in fat and calories. It ticks plenty of “dietary” benefit boxes.

Can I substitute milk for evaporated milk in flan? ›

Regular Milk

For the most foolproof evaporated milk substitute, make your own: Into a saucepan, place approximately 60 percent more milk than called for in the recipe, bring it to a boil, and gently reduce it until the desired amount is reached.

How do I tell when bread pudding is done? ›

Why does my bread pudding fall after I take it out of the oven? ›

Not allowing it to rest after baking

It is usual for bread pudding to somewhat collapse when it goes from the oven to the room temperature air, but you surely don't want to further contribute to it becoming flat. Therefore, don't dish it out too quickly.

How do you keep bread pudding from getting soggy? ›

To prevent horribly runny bread pudding, you also want to warm up the milk before adding it to the other ingredients for easier soaking. Additionally, cover the bread pudding with foil — but only for half of the baking time. This will ensure that the pudding is neither overdone nor underdone.

What is another name for milk pudding? ›

In some Commonwealth countries these puddings are known as custards (or curds) if they are egg-thickened, as blancmange if starch-thickened, and as jelly if gelatin-based.

How is purin different from flan? ›

Purin is essentially the Japanese version of a pudding otherwise known as creme caramel, flan or baked custard around the world. Purin are so popular in Japan that you will find them in everywhere from convenience stores to patisseries. You can even find powdered purin to make at home!

What is classed as a milk pudding? ›

For anyone unfamiliar with it, it is one of a tribe of puddings known as milk puddings which are essentially a starchy ingredient cooked in milk and sweetened with sugar, but in my opinion, they need to also contain cream and flavourings such as bay leaves, vanilla or lemon rind.

What dessert is flan similar to? ›

Crème caramel and flan are two nearly identical sweet desserts; however, there are a few differences between crème caramel and the savory pastry version of flan.
