What is the difference between the Grand Ole Opry and Ryman Auditorium? ›

In the 1970s, it was decided that the Grand Ole Opry needed its own permanent home and so the Grand Ole Opry building was constructed. The show moved from Ryman Auditorium in 1974, and with an undetermined purpose and future, the Ryman fell into disrepair in the years that followed.

Its unique architecture and state-of-the-art sound technology make every show one of the best you've ever seen. Even skeptics have called it “spiritual,” making it a sacred place for music lovers.

Why Did the Grand Ole Opry Move Away From the Ryman? It was determined that the Grand Ole Opry needed its own home, and so the show moved to its permanent home across town in 1974. Ryman Auditorium had been home to the Grand Ole Opry for more than 30 years, from 1943 to 1974, before the show moved to the Opry House.

Jeans and a blouse is just fine. Depending on the time of year, you'll see people in anything from shorts and tshirts to dressier. For the Opry, I always suggest people wear what they are most comfortable wearing out for the evening. You won't be out of place and you're more likely to have an enjoyable time.

Glory Days of “The Grand Old Opry” (1943-1974)

Hosting some of the most famous and influential musicians of all time, the Ryman became synonymous with Country and Western music. In 1945, the prototype of bluegrass music was born live during a performance with Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, and Lester Flatt.

Johnny Cash- In 1965, after several years of being an Opry member, Johnny got into a little trouble. After drinking a little too much, Johnny smashed the footlights out on the front of the Opry Stage- as seen in the movie 'I Walk The Line'.

Why did George Strait decline Grand Ole Opry? ›

That's right, the King himself is not a member. Now, before you shake your head too much, Strait was offered membership but declined. He likes to be in Texas and you have to make a commitment to perform a few times a year at the Opry house and it just wasn't something George was willing to do.

Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Jeannie Seely, and Dolly Parton joined the Opry family. Elvis Presley made his only Opry appearance. Johnny Cash became a member, met his wife, and during one infamous show, broke all of the footlights at the front of the stage inside Ryman Auditorium.
